Following Techtime request – Silicon Labs IoT competition will be open to Israeli Developers

Silicon Labs and Digi-Key announced an IoT design contest for developers to create innovative connected “things”. Following a request from Techtime, a decision was made to include Israel in the competition.

Silicon Labs (NASDAQ: SLAB) and Digi-Key announced an IoT design contest for pioneering developers who want to create connected “things” that will help make the world a smarter, more connected and energy friendly place. The Your IOT Connected World competition is open to all inventors; from integrated systems professionals to electronics enthusiasts.

The competition will run until 7th July. The competition website http://www.youriotcontest.com  invites people to select 15 designs to be included in the final list.  A team of Silicon Labs and Digi-Key experts will select the three winners. Winners will be announced in the beginning of August.

The top three winners will be able to choose $10,000 worth of Silicon Labs components that they need (microcontrollers, wireless chips, sensors, boards and more – valued up to $10,000) to help them put their product to market.

When Techtime examined t an earlier version of the announcement it became clear that it was open to a limited number of countries which included North America and Western and Central Europe and Turkey, but not to Israeli developers, even though most global high tech companies consider Israel to be part of Europe.

Last week Techtime contacted Dale Weisman, spokesman at Silicon Labs, and asked for clarifications regarding Israeli developers taking part in the competition.  The spokesman put the request to the board, and it was decided to include Israel is list of countries where the competition will be held.

“Whether designers are solving an existing problem or creating a totally new invention, ideas are limited only by the developer’s imagination,” said David Sandys, director of technical marketing for Digi-Key. “Winning IoT designs may include innovations like connected home devices, smart appliances, lighting control systems, wearable technology, security systems, wireless sensor networks and much more.”

Silicon Labs from Sunnyvale, California, was founded in 1996 and has approximately 1,100 employees. The company develops analog-intensive, mixed-signal integrated circuits (ICs), analog components for wireless communications, analog to digital converters (ADC) and Digital to Analog Converters (DAC), amplifiers, micro controllers and more. In 2014 sales amounted to approx. $620M. The company traded on the NASDAQ at market value of 2.24 billion dollars.

Silicon Labs is represented in Israel by Data-JCE and Elina Engineering , and globally distributed by Digi-Key.
