When NXP announced its intention to take over Freescale, one of the official grounds for the takeover was its need to strengthen its position in the automotive sector. Now, as the merger of the two companies is being realized the level of daily operations, this intention is becoming a more concrete form.

In a meeting with NXP’s EMEA Director Distribution Giuseppe Finazzi, Techtime learned more about NXP’s move: “In the automotive sector, NXP was considered a leading company in the field of communication components and interfaces for internal car systems, while Freescale was considered a leading developer of microcontrollers (MCU) for the automotive sector”.

“Today, we can offer a comprehensive solution which includes automotive Microcontrollers as well as all the required interfaces. This is done in three phases: Teaching our staff so they can present the combined solutions, the creation of a comprehensive and integrative bundle and the development of a software combining communication interfaces with the processor”.

“At the same time, we are investing vast resources in the field of security. NXP brings a lot of knowledge, gathered from years of activity in the fields of smart cards, credit cards and payment systems. We are now integrating our unique knowledge in the emerging field of smart cars”.

Are you focusing on the autonomous car market?

Finazzi: “According to our vision, industry and automotive are the main fields of growth today, and of course, these two fields are interlinked. In 5-10 years, cars will be very different than what they are now. Vehicles will be secured, connected autonomous and smart. But this is not enough – smart cars exist today already, but we don’t see them on the road, because the infrastructure is not ready for them”.

“In order for smart the smart car to function, it needs a smart environment such as smart houses, smart street lighting, smart signage and even smart garages. Only when these are deployed and connected, can the autonomous car roll into the streets. Without infrastructure, automated cars will stand still”.

“This infrastructure is what we call the industrial market. Israel is very advanced in these two fields – autonomous driving and industrial infrastructure solutions”

“We see this trend in many fields. Why does a communication company such as Vodafone invest in autonomous cars? Because it wants to supply it with services. Nobody wants to be reduced to a USB socket used for charging a mobile phone. This is why Apple wants to acquire an autonomous car producer, everyone is interested in the service infrastructure developing around the autonomous car”.
