Mellanox Indigo is actually Ezchip NPS-400

5 February, 2017

The NPS-400 was developed by Ezchip long before the company was sold to Mellanox for $811 million, in the beginning of 2016

Mellanox Technologies announced last week the IDG4400 Flex Network platform based on Indigo, Mellanox’s newest network processor. The Indigo is capable of sophisticated packet processing of layers L2-L7. It is targeted for intensive applications, including router-type functions, intrusion prevention and detection, application recognition, firewall, DDoS prevention and more. Indigo hardware acceleration have demonstrated stateful packet processing at record rates of 500Gb/s and deep packet inspection (DPI) at 320Gb/s over millions of flows. According to the company, it is 20 times higher versus other offerings at this scale.

The NPS-400 was developed by Ezchip long before the company was sold to Mellanox for $811 million, in the beginning of 2016. The new processor combines CPU capabilities with those of NPU, in order address the next generation of smart high-performance carrier and data-center networks. It  features programmable CPU cores that are highly optimized for packet processing and hardware accelerators for security and DPI (Deep Packet Inspection). On-chip search engines including TCAM with scaling through algorithmic extension to external low-cost low-power DRAM memory and a multitude of network interfaces providing an aggregated bandwidth of 800-Gigabits per second including 10-, 40- and 100-Gigabit Ethernet, Interlaken and PCI Express interfaces.

L2–L7 switching and packet processing

Mellanox said that a single IDG4400 network processor platform is capable of realizing the DPI processing capability of a full rack of servers. In addition, the Indigo platform may be used in conjunction with Mellanox’s Spectrum Ethernet switch systems for increased scalability. The Spectrum switch systems provide Ethernet connectivity of 10, 25, 40, 50 and 100Gb/s. By combining Indigo IDG4400 and Spectrum Ethernet switching solutions, data center managers gain a cost efficient, comprehensive L2–L7 switching and packet processing solution capable of analyzing data in depth as it passes through the network.

Mellanox Technologies (NASDAQ: MLNX) supply end-to-end Ethernet and InfiniBand intelligent interconnect solutions and services for servers, storage, and hyper-converged infrastructure. Lately it reportedr revenues of $221.7 million in the fourth quarter 2016, and $857.5 million sales in fiscal year 2016. The company project a quarterly revenues of $200 million to $210 million in Q1 2017 with Non-GAAP gross margins of 71-72 percent. Following the annual report, the stock in NASDAQ plunged approximately 3% and the company is traded now with a market value of $2.3 billion.
